This is a strategy demonstration resource to help instructors successfully conduct a deliberation. It includes the following:

  • A short video demonstrating the strategy (see above or view on YouTube)
  • A packet of four handouts to help guide students through the deliberations process:
    • Handout A: Deliberation Guide
    • Handout B: Deliberation Notes
    • Handout C: Free Discussion & Individual Reflection
    • Handout D: Post-Deliberation Self-Assessment & Feedback
  • A customizable PowerPoint slide deck to accompany deliberation activities in the classroom

The resources in this bundle are designed to be paired with Street Law’s deliberation materials.

Deliberation teaches people how to discuss controversial issues by carefully considering multiple perspectives and searching for consensus. In preparation for deliberations, all participants read common, balanced background information on the issue. During the discourse, they offer arguments for each position on a contested public issue, first drawing from the text and then bringing in their own experiences.
