European Court of Human Rights Mini-Moot Court Lesson

This high school-level lesson plan guides students through a mini-moot court activity of a European Court of Human Rights case.

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

• Analyze facts and issues, construct arguments, and simulate an appellate case before the European Court of Human Rights;
• Role play an attorney or judge involved in an appellate case before the European Court of Human Rights; and
• Hone independent analysis, critical thinking, and public speaking skills.

Teachers can choose between the following cases:

• Bărbulescu v. Romania: Right to privacy
• Özlü v. Türkiye: Freedom of expression on social media
• S., V., and A. v. Denmark: Preventive detention
